About Byron Bay Backpackers

We're an independent guide to Byron Bay, written for backpackers who want the real story — which hostel actually fits your trip, which surf school is worth the money, when to leave town for Schoolies, and how the Working Holiday Visa rules actually work in the Northern Rivers in 2026.

What we're not

We're not Holiday Village Backpackers — the hostel that operated at 116 Jonson Street for 37+ years before being sold via JLL Hotels in 2020 and winding down. The byronbaybackpackers.com.au domain was unused for several years; we acquired it in May 2026 to build this guide. We have no connection to that prior business and don't represent any single hostel.

We're not the Byron Visitor Centre (closed August 2025), Destination Byron, Byron Shire Council, or any government body.

Our hostel reviews are written before any commercial relationship is in place, and we list every hostel — including the ones we'd struggle to recommend — because that's what makes us useful to you.

We acknowledge the Bundjalung Arakwal people as the Traditional Custodians of the land we write about — Cavanbah (Byron Bay) and Walgun (Cape Byron) — and pay respects to Elders past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded. For Indigenous-led tours of Country, we point to Aunty Delta Kay's Bundjalung walks at Walgun (the only first-person Country tour in Byron), and to the Bundjalung of Byron Bay (Arakwal) RNTBC for the formal Native Title body. The Arakwal National Park is co-managed with Traditional Custodians.
