- • NEVER pay an upfront fee — "training fee", "registration", "transport bond" = 100% scam
Wages (2026)
- • Award minimum (national) — $24.95/hr
- • Horticulture piece rates — minimum guarantee 15% above hourly minimum (legislated April 2022). Honest growers $25-32/hr equivalent
- • Hospitality (HIGA) — $25-28/hr base, +25% Sat, +50% Sun, +125% public holidays, +15% midnight
- • Cash-in-hand labouring — $25-30/hr; no super, no leave, no cover. Avoid — you can't use it for visa proof.
- • Hostel work-for-accommodation — typically 2-4 hr/day for bed only. Calculate the equivalent before agreeing.
Tax + Super (2025-26)
- • Backpacker tax rates — 15% to $45k, 30% to $135k, 37% to $190k, 45% above. No tax-free threshold for WHV holders.
- • TFN — apply at ato.gov.au within 28 days of arrival; takes 10-28 days. Without TFN, employer withholds 47%.
- • Super — 12% (rose from 11.5% July 2025) of ordinary earnings paid by employer.
- • DASP (departing super claim) — WHV holders pay 65% withholding on departure (vs 35% for other temp residents — a deliberate disincentive)
- • Tax return — lodge between 1 July and 31 October via myGov + ATO online
Travel insurance
