Our review

Aquarius is the big, loud, year-round party hostel — 144 rooms wrapped around a pool, the ROCA Cabana pool bar at one end, a restaurant doing nightly entertainment at the other, and a vibe that doesn't really wind down. It won the Hostelworld 2025 Hoscars Best Large Hostel category and you can feel why: the events run nightly without interruption, the bar staff actually want to be there, the rooms are clean even after a Saturday night, and the front-of-house operation is professional in a way most Byron hostels aren't.

It's adults-only, which solves two things at once — no children running through the corridors at 7am, and no families to disturb if you're rolling in at 3am. 100 metres from Main Beach. Pool is open year-round, heated in winter. The ROCA Cabana pool bar is genuinely good — Peruvian-Argentinian-Aussie food influences (yes, that's how they describe it), happy hour from 4pm, the kitchen runs late.

Who it suits: backpackers who came to Byron specifically to make friends and have a story-worthy week. First-time east-coast travellers doing the Sydney-Cairns loop. The 18–28 demographic that wants the social energy without rooms full of 16-year-olds. Couples sharing a dorm bed budget who plan to be at the bar most nights anyway. WHV holders who want the most direct path to a hospitality job in town (Aquarius' reception runs an active job board, and a lot of Byron bartenders started as Aquarius dormmates).

Who it definitely doesn't suit: anyone who wants quiet (this is genuinely loud, every night, ear plugs are not optional); families with kids (literally cannot book — adults-only); travellers in their late 30s+ looking for a calmer experience; people who want a kitchen they can actually cook a real meal in (you can, but most Aquarius guests eat at the bar/restaurant).

Practicalities: 144 rooms means inventory almost always available, even in peak. Dorm prices stay relatively reasonable in low season ($26 starting) and climb to $80+ in summer; private ensuites run $109–250 depending on season. Pre-paid first night, ID required, deposit on card. Adults-only means 18+ for everyone. The dorms are 4-, 6-, and 8-bed configurations, all with individual lockers and reading lights. Bathrooms are shared but there's a high ratio so you don't queue. AC throughout. WiFi is decent in common areas, patchy in the back wing — bring a hostel mate's data tether if you need to work.

The events programming is what people remember. Beer pong tournaments, ladies' night, dance comps, theme nights, live music spilling out of the restaurant most evenings. There's a structured social hour that genuinely helps solo travellers meet people in their first 24 hours. Cheeky Monkeys (or its successor venue — see our venues directory for current status) is a 5-minute walk; Woody's and the Beachie are similar distance.

WHV / longer-stay note: Aquarius offers a weekly rate that's significantly cheaper than seven nightly bookings. It's not advertised — ask at reception. Job board pinned in the lobby has hospitality jobs across town updated weekly. Multiple Byron bar managers tell us they specifically scout Aquarius for staff because the property attracts hospitality-minded travellers. The pool deck is the daytime social anchor. Sunbathing, beer-pong, swim-up bar service. It's busy from about 11am, peaks at 3pm, dies down by 6pm as everyone gets ready for the evening. Beach is right there — towel down on a sun lounger, swim, repeat.

The downsides are mostly the upsides reframed. It IS loud. The bar IS open late. The restaurant DOES run live music. If you booked this thinking "144 rooms means I can find a quiet corner" — you cannot. The whole property is loud. We've seen reviews from travellers who arrived expecting boutique and were genuinely shocked. It's not boutique. It's a 144-room party engine.

The cleanliness is impressive given the volume. They run a serious housekeeping operation; even at 3pm Sunday after a heavy Saturday, common areas are tidy. Bathrooms are cleaned multiple times daily.

If you came to Byron to party, this is the choice. Run a budget that includes nightly bar tabs ($30–60), expect to sleep less than at home, and you'll have a very Byron week. If your trip is longer than four nights, swap to Wake Up or YHA Cape Byron for the calmer half.

If you came to Byron to read books, surf at dawn and write in your journal — book Life in Byron or Wake Up instead, and visit Aquarius for one big night. You'll get the experience without the sleep deprivation.
