Our review

The veteran. Backpackers Inn has been on Shirley Street since the mid-1970s, pre-Bluesfest, pre-everything that made Byron Byron in the popular imagination. Direct beach path through the dunes means you're in the surf in three minutes from the dorm door. Free bikes, free shuttle bus, snorkel gear loaners, beach volleyball court, table tennis, a properly working communal kitchen. Vibe is surf-first social rather than party-first.

This is also widely regarded as Byron's best informal job board — owners have decades of relationships with farms in the Northern Rivers and hospitality venues in town, and reception actively connects long-stay guests with work that signs WHV visa days. If you're a 462 holder looking for hospo work or a 417 doing 88 days, this is the property to consider basing from.

Who it suits: surfers (the closest dorm bed to the beach in Byron — fight us); WHV holders, especially those new to AU and wanting the job-board connection; backpackers who want classic east-coast hostel social without 144-room party intensity; travellers in their 20s-30s wanting affordability and beach access in the same package; first-time backpackers who want hostel-comfort levels but also surf access.

Who it doesn't suit: travellers prioritising design or new-build aesthetic (this is a 1970s+ property, refreshed but not renovated to Drifter standards); the party-only crowd (Aquarius/Nomads beat this for nightly events); the absolute boutique tier (Surf House wins).

The "since the 70s" heritage matters. Owners have iterated on the property for 50 years, refining what a backpacker hostel needs. That shows up in small things — bike racks where you'd want them, the snorkel gear in a labelled cupboard, the shuttle running on a sensible schedule, the kitchen having enough cooktops at dinner time. Less polish than the new builds, but everything works.

The Byron Bay Surf Camp partnership with Byron Bay Surf School (since 1996) is a multi-night dorm + lessons combo that's the way plenty of European backpackers learn to surf. Different from the Surf House + Soul Surf School package — the BBSS package is closer to the beach and has been refined longer; some travellers prefer it. Both are good. Pick on availability + price for your dates.

Practicalities: outdoor pool, terrace with evening entertainment (mellower than Aquarius), free shuttle bus on a town-area route, free bike hire with helmets + locks, communal kitchen with multiple cooktops, shared lounge with TV, table tennis and beach volleyball on the property, snorkel gear loaners, free WiFi (decent), free parking (rare and valuable for road-trippers), laundry on-site. Direct beach-path access through the dunes — a 2-3 minute walk.

Dorms are mixed and female-only, generally 4-8 bed configurations. Privates available for couples. Lockers in every dorm. AC in some rooms (older buildings have fans only — verify when booking if AC matters to you). The buildings show their age but they're clean — multi-times-daily housekeeping in common areas, daily in dorms.

Pricing: dorms $19 low season (one of the cheapest in town) / $50-99 high; privates $130-230. Single-night stays sometimes refused in peak season — minimum 2 nights is common in summer. Long-stay weekly rates available, ask reception (often the cheapest weekly rate in central Byron).

The job board on the wall behind reception is genuinely active. Daily new postings. Reception staff have walked the orchards and know which farms pay properly. The "informal placement" is real — they'll often ring a contact directly for a guest they've gotten to know. This is the value-add other hostels can't easily replicate.

If we landed on a 462 visa with 88 days to knock over and no plan, this is where we'd start. If we wanted surf-and-stay specifically, we'd compare BBSS package here vs Soul Surf + Surf House package and pick on price/dates. If we wanted nightlife + beach access in one property, this is the answer (Aquarius is louder but further from the actual sand).
