Our review
Wake Up took over the old Cape Byron Hostel site at the Belongil end and turned it into something that sits between a hostel and a wellness retreat. It's the only Byron property with a sauna and cold plunge — which sounds gimmicky in a brochure but, after a sunset surf at Belongil Beach 50m down the path, makes sense quickly. The Tree House Bar is decent. The free yoga tent is actually run, not just installed for the photo. The free shuttle to the bus interchange means you can land in Byron at 6am off an overnight Greyhound from Brisbane and not pay $30 for a transfer to your hostel.
Won the Hostelworld 2025 Hoscars Best Hostel Chain. Where Aquarius dominates the party category and Surf House the boutique category, Wake Up's lane is wellness-led social — it's social, but the centre of gravity is the sauna deck and the yoga tent rather than the bar.
Who it suits: travellers who want hostel social energy without the 3am-corridor-running version of it. Solo female travellers (the Belongil location is well-lit, the property is gated, dorm doors are key-coded). Surfers prioritising proximity to a quieter break (Belongil Beach is less crowded than Main, similar quality on the right swell). WHV holders mid-trip looking for somewhere to recover from a heavy week. Wellness-curious travellers who don't want to commit to a yoga-retreat package.
Who it doesn't suit: travellers prioritising town-centre walking distance (Wake Up is 15 minutes' walk to Cheeky Monkeys; manageable but not zero); the budget-cheapest crowd (Arts Factory and Backpackers Inn beat it on dorm rate); travellers who specifically want a big party hostel with nightly events (Aquarius is the answer).
The Belongil location matters and is often misunderstood. Belongil is the western end of the Byron beachfront — just past the lagoon entrance, past the Belongil Estate. It's residential-feeling, quieter than Main Beach, and the surf break is consistently fun without being over-crowded. The 50-metre walk from the hostel front door to the sand is genuine — straight down the path, you're in the water. Town-centre venues (Cheeky Monkeys / Woody's / The Rails) are 1.2km along the beachfront walking path or 15 minutes by foot. Most guests walk; the free shuttle runs town-area only, not to-and-from bars.
The sauna and ice bath are the property's differentiator. Sauna is a proper Finnish-style cabin (15+ minutes hot, then plunge) on the deck. The ice bath is exactly what it sounds like — about 4°C, two minutes is brutal, the dopamine hit afterwards is real. Both are free for guests, queues are minimal except after 5pm. They genuinely help with surf recovery and travel-fatigue more than gimmicky decor would suggest.
The yoga tent runs free morning and evening sessions, taught by a rotating roster of local instructors. Class size keeps small (15–20 mats laid out). The instruction quality varies but the price is right. If you want serious practice, Byron Yoga Centre or Creature Yoga in town are paid alternatives — see our things to do for the wider yoga options.
The Tree House Bar is the social hub. Cocktails $12–15, decent local craft on tap (Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, naturally — see our Stone & Wood brewery tour entry), kitchen serves shareable plates until 9pm. Bar runs to ~11pm weekdays, midnight weekends. Then the property goes mostly quiet — the parties are happening 1.2km away in town, not here.
Practicalities: 37 rooms, mix of 4/6/8-bed dorms (mixed and female-only), twin and double ensuite privates. Free surfboard hire racked outside. Free yoga. Free shuttle (in-town routes, not airport-direct). 24/7 reception. Pool, BBQ area, big communal kitchen with prep zones. AC throughout. WiFi fast in common areas, decent in dorms. ID and card deposit on check-in.
Pricing: dorm $27 low / $90 high; privates $130–220. Comparable to YHA but with the wellness facilities. If those facilities don't matter to you, YHA Cape Byron is cheaper for similar amenities; if they do, Wake Up is a clear winner.
The Tree House Bar can get loud Thursday–Saturday. We'd book a dorm in the back wing (ask reception specifically) if early sleep matters. Most Belongil-end dorms are fine; the ones above the bar are not. The shuttle is genuinely useful for arrival/departure but not for nights out — you'll Uber or walk back from town.
If we were planning a 4-night Byron stay with one big night out and three quieter days of surf, sauna and yoga, this is where we'd book. If we were here for 2 weeks doing WHV, we'd split between Wake Up (recovery weeks) and Backpackers Inn (job-board weeks). For a single night between Sydney and Brisbane on the Greyhound — the free in-town shuttle alone makes it worth booking over Aquarius.

Best for solo female travellers who want quiet + secure
Booked seven nights in April 2026. The property is gated, dorms are key-coded, and the female-only option felt secure even arriving solo at night. Wellness facilities (sauna, ice bath, yoga tent) are all properly used by guests, not just decorative. Only marked down a star because the kitchen got crowded at dinner time and there are only 4 cooktops. If you're a heavy self-caterer, factor that in.
The sauna + ice bath combo is worth the trip alone
I was sceptical of the wellness pitch but the sauna ritual after a sunset surf at Belongil hooked me by day two. Free yoga is genuinely run, not just installed. Free shuttle to the bus interchange saved me $30 on a 6am Greyhound arrival. The Tree House Bar gets loud Thu-Sat but I asked for a back-wing dorm and slept fine. Belongil is 15 min walk to town but the path along the beach makes it a feature, not a chore.
