Mojosurf
1 Skinners Shoot Road, Byron Bay
Surf-and-stay multi-day camps based at Arts Factory. Sydney→Byron 5-day surf trip is the iconic backpacker route.
Our review
Mojosurf packages multi-day surf camps based at the Arts Factory complex in Byron, plus the iconic Sydney→Byron 5-day surf trip — possibly the most-recommended single experience on the East Coast backpacker circuit. The pitch is "live in a minibus for a week, surf eight different beaches, make friends faster than any solo trip you'll ever take."
Who it suits: East Coast backpackers doing the Sydney-Brisbane run who want to add a structured surf-trip middle. Solo travellers wanting an instant social crew. Anyone who's tried surfing once and wants to do a proper week of it. Note: not the cheapest per-lesson option — you're paying for the bus, the accommodation, the social structure as a package.
Pricing: 2-7 day camps starting from a couple of hundred dollars (varies — verify current pricing via mojosurf.com or via reseller Peter Pans / RTW Backpackers / Backpacker Deals). The Sydney→Byron 5-day trip has historically been ~$735 all-in.
Heavily resold via the backpacker bus network — Peter Pans, RTW Backpackers, Avocado Travel, Backpacker Deals all carry Mojosurf inventory and pay commission. Booking via the resellers can sometimes get you a discount versus direct.
Vs alternatives: Soul / Let's Go / Blackdog are single-location Byron surf schools. Mojosurf is the multi-location surf-trip experience. Different products. If you specifically want "I want to surf eight beaches on the East Coast and travel with the same crew of strangers all week", Mojosurf is the only option doing exactly that at scale.
The catch: Tripadvisor reviews are mixed — some travellers love the experience, others find the bus/dorm sleep patterns or the social-pressure-cooker aspect not their thing. Read recent reviews before booking. Brand recognition is real but does not guarantee personal fit.
The Arts Factory base in Byron means you'll be staying at one of the most distinctive (and divisive) hostels in town — see our Arts Factory review for context. If hippie-festival aesthetic isn't your thing, the Byron leg of the trip might feel off.
