Soul Surf School
14 Bay Street, Byron Bay
Clarkes Beach surf school. Group lessons, private 1:1, surf-and-stay packages with The Surf House. Rezdy-bookable.
Our review
Soul Surf School has the Bay Street beachfront shop and bases lessons on Clarkes Beach, the gentlest learner sandbank in Byron. Group lessons cap small enough that you actually get coaching — not the warehouse-style volume teaching some bigger schools do. Rezdy-integrated, NSW National Parks-permitted, family-owned, and the surf-and-stay package partnership with The Surf House is the most popular single purchase for backpackers in their first week.
Who it suits: first-time surfers (the Soul + Surf House package is the cleanest "lessons + accom + don't think about anything" purchase in town); WHV holders trying to use up their first week productively; couples wanting a shared learn-to-surf experience; backpackers who want lessons within walking distance of their hostel.
The teaching method is solid. Standard 2-hour group lesson covers basic theory on the sand (how to read waves, ocean awareness, paddling technique), then the bulk of the time in the water actually attempting to stand up. Soft-top boards and wetsuits included. Most students stand up by the end of lesson one. The progression to lesson two and three (catching unbroken waves, turning) is real if you book the multi-day package.
Pricing: standalone group lesson ~$79. The Soul + Surf House surf-and-stay package — 3 nights dorm + 3 group lessons — is ~$250 (more for private rooms, ~$600). It's bookable directly at soulsurfschool.com.au or via Rezdy at soulsurfschool.rezdy.com. As of May 2026 the booking CTA on our site sends you to their Rezdy page; we're working with Soul on a direct-booking partnership that maintains this pricing.
What stands out: family-owned (not a chain), Bay Street beachfront location means you walk straight from briefing to ocean, no transport required. Soul also runs gear hire (boards, bikes) from the same shop — useful one-stop for the surf-trip-to-Byron crowd.
The only catch: like most popular surf schools, Soul books out 1-2 weeks ahead for peak season (Dec-Feb, Easter, Splendour week historically). Book early or take whatever timeslot you can get.
We rate Soul as the most reliable of the four major Byron surf schools (vs Let's Go Surfing, Blackdog, Mojosurf — see our Learn to surf in Byron Bay guide for the full comparison). Pick Soul if you want the cleanest learn-to-surf-with-accommodation package; pick Let's Go Surfing for the smallest group ratio per dollar; pick Blackdog for the cheapest 5-day intensive; pick Mojosurf for the multi-day surf-bus social trip.
