Autumn surf check: The Pass and Wategos are firing — but it's crowded
Cyclone swell from the Coral Sea has lit up the headland. Etiquette matters more than ever.
By Byron Bay Backpackers editorial team
Autumn (Mar-May) is the most consistent surf season in Byron and the past fortnight has delivered. A series of Coral Sea cyclones have generated swell that wraps cleanly around the cape — The Pass has been holding chest-to-overhead on dawn patrols all week, Wategos has been longboard heaven.
The crowds match. On Saturday morning the lineup at The Pass had 80+ people in the water by 7am. Local etiquette is being enforced — visiting backpackers paddling out and dropping in on regulars are getting (politely or not) called on it.
If you're a beginner-to-intermediate surfer here in May: don't paddle out at The Pass on a busy day. Surf Clarkes Beach (gentle whitewash, the sandbank stays consistent), or paddle out at Belongil (less crowded, better for catching unbroken waves while you learn priority). The Pass is one of Australia's most localised waves; respect it.
For learners — all four major surf schools (Soul, Let's Go, Blackdog, Mojosurf) are still running daily lessons at Clarkes.
