A backpacker's week in Byron for under $400: what we'd actually spend
Dorm + cooking + free activities + one paid experience. A realistic budget for May-August.
By Byron Bay Backpackers editorial team
A week in Byron on $400 is genuinely achievable in off-peak season (May-August) without skipping the things that make Byron worth visiting. The math:
- Accommodation — 7 nights in a $26 dorm at YHA Byron Bay or Backpackers Inn = $182. - Food — cook 5 dinners at the hostel kitchen ($8 each = $40), brunch at Punch & Daisy 3x ($15 each = $45), 2 dinners out at Fishmongers or Bay Kebabs ($15 each = $30). Coffee daily ($5x7 = $35). Total: $150. - One paid experience — Soul Surf 2-hour lesson at $79.
That's $411 — basically $400.
What you get: a surf lesson at Clarkes, free lighthouse walks (do this 3 times — different light each time), free Belongil sunsets, free hostel surfboards (if you're at Wake Up or Surf House), free morning yoga at Wake Up, and the cafe-reading culture that makes Byron Byron.
What you skip on this budget: skydiving ($370+), hot air ballooning ($340+), the Nimbin tour ($55-79), nice restaurants (Three Blue Ducks $150+ for two). Save those for when you're back in Australia with a working-holiday paycheck banked.
Higher budget? Add the Stone & Wood tour ($35), the kayak with dolphins ($89), and one nice meal. ~$520 total.
