Hostel kitchen survival: 7 unspoken Byron rules

The kitchen is the social hub. Get the etiquette right and you'll make friends faster.

The hostel kitchen in Byron is the unofficial social hub. Most travellers who make lasting friendships made them in the kitchen at 7pm cooking pasta. The unspoken rules that make this work:

1. Label your food — put your name on every container in the fridge. The dorm-mate stealing your hummus is a real Byron problem.

2. Clean as you cook — wash the pan while the rice is going. The shared-kitchen ethos depends on everyone doing this.

3. Ask before borrowing — even ingredients. "Can I steal a teaspoon of your olive oil?" is fine. Silently taking is not.

4. Don't hog cooktops — peak cooking time is 6-8pm and four cooktops have to serve 30+ guests. Get on, get off, eat at the communal table.

5. Offer leftovers — cooked too much pasta? "Anyone want some?" is the fastest way to make friends in any hostel.

6. Wash communal dishes — pans, knives, chopping boards. Even if you didn't use them. It's a give-back to the culture.

7. Stock the basics if you're long-stay — olive oil, salt, soy sauce, garlic. If you're here for 2+ weeks, contribute to the communal pantry. Other long-stay travellers will reciprocate.

The hostels with the strongest kitchen cultures: YHA Byron Bay, Wake Up!, Life in Byron. Aquarius has a kitchen but most guests eat at the on-site restaurant; Drifter has Sunday Cook-Up communal meals which is a different model entirely.
