Byron has one of Australia's strongest small-venue live music scenes for a town its size. The locked rotation:

- The Rails (Railway Friendly Bar) — live music every single night, no cover, mix of acoustic-folk, blues, rock, soul. The longest-running music venue in town. - The Beach Hotel — most nights, mostly cover bands + acoustic acts. Beachfront atmosphere. - The Northern Hotel ("The Nort") — weekends, pub-rock + cover bands. - The Mez Club — when programming is good, this is the best night out in Byron. Live music early evenings, DJs late. Programming-driven; check the calendar. - Woody's Surf Shack — DJs late, occasional live music. - The Mullumbimby pub circuit (20 min drive) — more folk + roots, lower-key venues. Worth the trip on a weekend.

For backpackers — The Rails is the no-fail option. Walk in any night, no cover charge, find a seat at the bar, listen to whoever's playing. Most Byron locals have made a friend at The Rails at some point.
