Rainy day in Byron: 7 things to do when the surf is blown out

Byron gets a fair stretch of rainy days through May-September when the south-easterly fronts roll through. The surf goes flat-or-blown, the lighthouse walk is muddy + slippery, and your dorm common room fills up fast. Here's the rotation:

1. Combi or Bayleaf brunch, then nothing — a 3-hour cafe session reading is a legitimate Byron move and locals do it without apology.

2. Stone & Wood brewery tour — indoors, dry, 5 tasting beers + brewing-deck walkthrough. 11am or 3pm weekdays.

3. Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens — 25 minutes out of town, the world's largest amethyst geodes + a buddha garden + tropical rainforest walks. Mostly under cover.

4. Hot air ballooning is OUT in rainy weather — they cancel. Skydiving the same. Book these on clear-weather days only.

5. Bay Pictures (small art-house cinema) at Mullumbimby 20 min north has consistently the best programming on the Northern Rivers. Worth a drive.

6. Aunty Delta Kay's Bundjalung walks still run in light rain — wet-weather gear provided.

7. Hostel reading day + cooking — Byron is one of the few backpacker towns where a slow rainy day actually feels okay. Try it.

Don't force it. Some days Byron rewards stopping.
