Where to actually eat as a vegetarian / vegan in Byron Bay
The Insta version vs the real one. Combi, Folk, Naked Treaties + the cheaper options the locals use.
By Byron Bay Backpackers editorial team
Byron is famous for its vegan + vegetarian cafe scene. The famous places — Combi, Naked Treaties, Folk — are genuinely good and worth one visit each. They're also expensive for what they are; a $22 acai bowl is a real price point and most backpackers can't do that daily.
The locals' rotation for vegetarian + vegan options:
- Punch & Daisy — $12-15 vegetarian wraps + salads. Fast service, no fuss. The daily cafe for plant-based eating. - Bayleaf — vegetarian options on the menu, breakfast bowls under $20. - The Byron Bay General Store — vegetarian-friendly breakfast + you walk out with sourdough and pantry items. - IGA Byron + Woolworths — the cheapest path. Eat at the hostel kitchen 4 nights a week, splurge on Combi once. - Local Pasta on Jonson (small kitchen) — vegetarian pasta dishes around $18. - The Bayleaf Yum Cha (Sunday) — vegetarian dim sum, large portions, good value.
The hidden gem: most Byron hostels have hot kitchens with multiple cooktops. Cooking a vegetarian dinner with the crew you met that afternoon is genuinely the better Byron experience than queuing 40 minutes at Combi. The IGA on Jonson Street has good produce + tofu + tempeh + cheap herbs.
For the Insta moment, do Combi once. For the actual Byron experience, cook with the crew.
