Sundive Byron Bay

Sundive Byron Bay is the only PADI 5-Star Dive Centre in Byron and the only dive operator that actually launches from inside Byron Bay — every other operator on the marketing page is running boats from Brunswick Heads or Ballina. Established 1988, base at The Pass, 10-minute boat ride to Julian Rocks Marine Reserve (Nguthungulli), one of the top-10 dive sites in Australia.

What you'll see at Julian Rocks: grey nurse sharks (June to November aggregations of 30+), leopard sharks (summer, harmless, beautiful), wobbegongs year-round on the bottom, turtles, manta rays, the occasional manta train. Whales (June-November) are sometimes audible underwater on calm days. Visibility ranges from 8m on a bad day to 25m on a clean autumn morning.

Who it suits: certified divers wanting to experience one of Australia's best sites; new divers ready to try a boat dive (intro dives available, no certification needed); travellers wanting to do the PADI Open Water Course (4 days, ~$695, internationally-recognised certification). Snorkel-only tours are also available for non-divers.

Pricing in 2026: snorkel tour from $145 (gear, boat, guide); intro dive (no certification, supervised) from $215; certified day dive from $165; PADI Open Water 4-day course from $695. 3 daily departures Wed-Sun, weather permitting.

What stands out: the launch location. Other Byron dive operators on aggregator sites are actually based in Brunswick Heads or Ballina and require driving 20-30 minutes to their boat. Sundive's boat launches from The Pass — meaning your dive day starts and ends in central Byron, no transfer. Less time in transit, more time on the dive site.

The PADI 5-Star rating is a real distinction. PADI runs strict certification standards on dive centres and 5-Star is the highest tier — covers facilities, instructor count, equipment maintenance, training capacity. There are perhaps 50 PADI 5-Star centres across Australia; this is one of two on the NSW north coast.

vs Byron Bay Dive Centre (the alternative): both dive Julian Rocks, both run PADI training, prices are competitive. Sundive's launch advantage is the deciding factor for most travellers — saves 30-60 minutes of transfer per dive day. Equipment quality is comparable. Pick Sundive unless availability or price specifically pushes you to BBDC.

The catch: Sundive doesn't run on Mondays and Tuesdays (3 daily Wed-Sun model). If your Byron stay is short and falls Mon-Tue, you'll need to look at BBDC or push the dive day. Conditions cancellations happen — book early in your stay so you have flexibility to reschedule.

For first-time divers — the intro dive at Julian Rocks is one of the best beginner experiences in Australia. You'll see grey nurse sharks if you visit in season. That's a genuinely unforgettable first dive.
